Asheru

“I’m making a personal statement to all other artists and labels: You can’t stop the music…” So says DC’s own Asheru (born Gabriel Benn), an artist who has, since the beginning of his recording career, taken the independent route and continues to do so as he prepares for the release of his solo debut, “While You Were Sleeping”, set to drop later this year.

Asheru is best known as part of the group Unspoken Heard, and as a founding member of the Brooklyn based label, Sevenheads Entertainment. Asheru has taken the independent move one step further with his own umbrella Guerilla Arts Ink, LLC, which is also home to his Arts-in Education program Project NOMMO, his publishing company, Arbor Day Publishing (ASCAP), as well as his multimedia company, The Black Lincolns.

Over the years, Asheru has had the fortune of traveling and performing all over the United States and Europe, both as a member of Unspoken Heard, and more recently as a solo artist. He has also had the experience of recording with some of the best emcees and producers in the game, such as J-Live, El Da Sensai, Lone Catalysts, Grap Luva, Pete Rock, and Talib Kweli. With critically acclaimed features on several 2004 releases such as the Halftooth Records compilation, “You Don’t Know the Half”, The Sound Providers LP, “An Evening with the Sound Providers”, and Jazzy Jeff’s “Hip Hop Forever II”, Asheru is poised to drop his highly anticipated solo debut, “While You Were Sleeping”, this fall. The album features production by both well known and up-and-coming producers Blackberry Jones, Mr. Who, JoeMoney, Roddy Rod, Oddisee, and Kev Brown. The first single from the album, “Black Moses”, was released earlier this year and is a constant on the college and independent radio hip hop charts.

Also scheduled to be released this year is the “While You Were Sleeping” Mixtape, along with the Black Lincolns Mixtape -- the first single, “The Hustle” is scheduled for release this July.
